by Sandrine Coin-Longeray

The meaning of the adjective ὀρθός, in the Bailly dictionary, is relatively
large. It means both "straight", "just", "correct", "true" and
"in accordance with the law". This work offers a semantic study
history of this term, from Homer to Sophocles, via Pindar,
Bacchylides, Aeschylus and Herodotus, in order to study the permanence and
evolutions of its meanings in context, but also in composition. This
term in fact enters into the formation of several nouns but
also of verbs, allowing to establish and understand its meaning in
composition as well as its development. A perspective of the
family of ὀρθός with the lexicon of wealth, in the last chapter of
the work, allows to highlight the great stability of this lexicon
in relation to the family of ὀρθός.
