Buffon, the naturalist philosopher, essential reading!

Posted by Béatrice Thony on

Yves Zarka's remarkable book: Buffon, the Philosophical Naturalist , has been very well received by biology-geology professors. This is evidenced by the glowing review by Johann-Gunther Egginger published in the latest APBG bulletin, from which we have selected a few passages:

"Another book on Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon , you think - and you are right - because that is also what I said to myself when I received it. But this is indeed an a priori that is quickly dispelled as Yves Zarka's work appears as a "UFO" in the world of biography publishing! Indeed, it is not common for a work, on the border between history and science, to offer its readers three levels of increasing depth: at level 1, the knowledge is above all factual, the biographical notice is detailed while the scientific and literary work of the scholar is presented in a general way; level 2 provides a useful complement to the previous level, the biography of the scholar being more summarized while the analysis of his work begins; level 3, in which the biography is not repeated, is more scientifically supported, providing access to the subtleties of the thought of Buffon, herself situated in the evolution of scientific ideas. In addition to these different reading levels intended for all audiences - from 9 to 99 years old, from middle school to high school students and even teachers - there is a Quiz that introduces each reading level (with the answers! and a supplement to Find out more ), questions and exercises at the end of each level (with the answers!), a first supplement on Buffon's century, a second on the stages and lineages of life science, a timeline, an impressive alphabetical glossary (170 articles!), numerous and rich documents useful for understanding and teaching (texts, illustrations, figures, maps), and bibliographic and siteographic indications!

...

First opus of the Collection "Chemins de science", the work of Yves Zarka with the collaboration of Marie-France Germain, very pleasant to read and of an exceptional richness, beyond a rendezvous in the "Siècle de Buffon", ultimately aims at three objectives: to develop the taste for sciences by means of their embodied history, to establish a bridge between sciences and human and social sciences, and to offer teachers multiple pedagogical paths in middle and high school. Objectives all achieved! Essential reading. "
