It's a job we all do at some point.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross describes five phases in this work, and the central phase is bargaining . Others describe more, others less, but in all cases it is unfortunately a work that we are all led to do in the course of our lives.

This is the work of mourning . The five phases described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross are as follows:

  • denial;
  • anger;
  • bargaining;
  • depression;
  • acceptance.

Grief is at the heart of Sans intention de la tuer . It took Odile Botti more than thirty years to craft this tale of life and death, thirty years to successfully put words to a fleeting and disturbing impression, but also to re-appropriate through words the relationship with her mother. With a chiseled language, the narrator travels through places , years and souls , resurrects causes and reshapes effects, in a brilliantly constructed tale where the present nourishes a suspense bringing a nagging question to this cleverly recomposed past .

"With her sharp words, Odile Botti keeps us in suspense throughout her pathetic confrontation with the maternal mystery. Mourning , madness and the darkness of the family novel punctuate this moving story, the journey of an unloved little girl who reconstructs her story during the most intimate and violent encounter with her mother's body. Let's dive with her into the emotions, in this heartbreaking text that leads us on unexpected paths and even reserves a tragic final surprise for us."

Philippe Grimbert, psychoanalyst and writer, winner of the 2004 Goncourt des Lycéens prize.
